A referendum on whether Scotland should be an independent country will take place on Thursday 18 September 2014. Following an agreement between the Scottish Government and the United Kingdom Government, the Scottish Independence Referendum Bill, setting out the arrangements for this referendum, was put forward on 21 March 2013, passed by the Scottish Parliament on 14 November 2013 and received Royal Assent on 17 December 2013. The referendum question, as recommended by the Electoral Commission, will be "Should Scotland be an independent country?”(wikipedia)
The referendum is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for people in Scotland to have their say about the country’s future.
My work is part of a bigger project aiming to analyze independence movements in Europe. In a challenging moment where the crisis of the economy is really affecting the population of Europe I thought interesting to analyze movement asking for something different, not only in the economy but also in the values of the society.
In this work I focused only on the people in favor of the independence of Scotland as I want to show the change, the proposal for a different society with more social based values. I decided to focus on the people who want a change and to analyze the reasons that push people to take such a risky decision, what they see in an independent Scotland that can not be achieved just remaining part of the UK.
I focused also on the culture of Scotland and on the specificities that make Scotland such a unique place in the UK, the language, the geographical position, the hospitality, the history.
For this reasons I travelled through Scotland, from Edinburgh to Inverness to the isle of Skye, meeting people from different groups supporting the independence as much as normal people just in favor of an independent Scotland. I tried to understand the different reasons, as much as the shared ones, for voting yes to the independence of Scotland.
